On Sunday evening, a tragic incident occurred in the Tanur area of Malappuram district in Kerala, where a houseboat carrying approximately 30 passengers, including women and children, overturned and sank near Tuvalthiram beach.
The state government has confirmed that at least 20 people lost their lives in the accident. Various hospitals where the victims were admitted reported the deaths to Sports Minister V Abdurahiman. He further stated that most of the deceased were women and children who had come for a ride during the ongoing school vacations.
The authorities suspect that more victims might still be trapped under the boat and require rescue operations. The reason for the mishap remains unknown, and the police will conduct an investigation into the matter. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of lives and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
