“Many times, patients suffering from life-threatening disease or condition can be saved by blood donation. Blood most required when patients suffered a major injury and during the delivery of a baby. The donation of blood has lots of health benefits for the donor as well. A healthy person can donate blood once in three months,”
Dr Purushottam Reddy.
We observe World Blood Donor Day on June 14 every year. The aim is to create awareness about donating blood regularly and to increase the availability of blood and its components to needy patients.
Donation of blood has become more important in pandemic times, as many blood banks are not getting the required quantity of blood. In a country like India, there are lots of myths circulating among the public regarding the donation of blood. In the pre-pandemic days, then also people used to hesitate to donate blood.
After the pandemic struck, the donation of blood touched a new low, which is affecting the treatment of the patients required blood.
KIMS Pathology department head Dr Purushottam Reddy said the voluntary donation of blood was affected in the pandemic. Because of Covid restrictions, many blood donation camps which NGOs, blood banks used to conduct were stopped. And people were also hesitant to donate blood in this pandemic.
Dr Reddy said many people have doubt can they donate the blood after taking the Covid vaccine? For this Dr Reddy said they can donate the blood after 14 days after vaccination is it a first dose or second dose whatever the brand of the vaccine they have taken that doesn’t matter.
The doctor also cleared the confusion about when a Covid recovered patient shall donate the blood? The doctor said after 3 months or 90 days after the recovery they can donate the blood.
Dr Reddy also said that those who are taking anti-diabetic medicine or those taking medicines for high blood pressure do not disqualify them from donating the blood but the disease should be under control and they need to check the BP and blood sugar levels before donating or the blood banks do the investigation before drawing the blood.
Donation of blood acts as an encouragement for others who normally hesitate to donate blood voluntarily. The donation of blood makes the donor feel he or she did a noble cause and it gives a satisfaction that he or she saved a life.
