Six members of a family, including four children, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well in their farm field near Doranhalli village in Surpur taluk in Yadgiri district on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Bhirmaraya Surpur (45), his wife Shantamma (36), daughters Sumitra, (12) Shridevi (14), Laxmi (4) and son Shivaraj (9) all are residents of Doranhalli village.
The victims may have plunged into the well on Monday morning, but the bodies reappeared in the evening when a passerby discovered them and alerted the police, according to Surpur Sub Division DySP Venkatesh Hogibandi.
Inspector Channayya S Hiremath and his team rushed to the scene and, with the assistance of fire and emergency personnel, fished out the bodies.
It’s been claimed that the family was having financial difficulties and had taken out a loan, although this has yet to be confirmed. According to Hiremath, bodies have been sent for a post-mortem and a case has been filed with the Surpur police and an investigation is going on.
